Carbon Monoxide Leak With Exposure Victims
By Deputy Fire Chief Dan Brooks
February 22, 2010
On Saturday morning while the annual Fire Company Auction was just kicking off, The Honey Brook Fire Company was dispatched to Zook Drive in Honey Brook Township for an odor investigation inside with exposure victims. Deputy 33 (Brooks) went enroute and was advised that there was a possible carbon monoxide leak in the home, and the occupants were at a different address than originally dispatched. Ambulance 33-1 was redirected to the new location while a second ambulance was dispatched to go to the scene. Engine 33-1 made the response followed quickly by Engine 33-5. Engine 33-1 arrived first to find one occupant in the front of the house waiting on responders. Deputy 33 arrived and assumed "Zook Drive Command", while crewmembers from the Engines donned their airpacks and entered the home with meters. The occupants at both locations were complaining of nausea and dizziness, warning signs for a CO, or Carbon Monoxide issue (also known as the silent killer gas). Crews inside the residence reported a high concentration of CO in the home and pin pointed the source to a malfunctioning furnace. The power was secured to the furnace and the home was aired out with fans. The home was turned over to the residents who all refused medical treatment and they were advised to get their furnace serviced before returning inside. Crews operated for a little over an hour before clearing.
