Building Fire at Heatherwood
By Captain Robert Klinger, Jr.
February 28, 2010
At 0627 hours Station 33, Station 34, Ladder 69, Ambulance 89-1, and Medic 93 were dispatched to the Heatherwood Retirement Community in Honey Brook Township for a reported building fire. Deputy 33 (Brooks) responded shortly there after and was advised by Chester County Fire Board of smoke in the dining room and they were not evacuating any residents from the buildings yet.
Deputy 33 arrived and established Heatherwood Command while crews entered the building to find a heavy odor and light smoke haze of unknown origin in the dining room. Crews accessed the common attic and were able to determine the cause to be related to the HVAC system overhead. Crews along with the building maintenance personnel secured the power to the HVAC in the attic, while other crews began to ventilate the building of the odor and smoke.
The building was handed back over to maintenance crews for repair of the HVAC systems, crews cleared the scene at 0727 hours.
**Special thanks to the staff of Heatherwood for providing coffee and refreshements to the FF's during the incident.
