April 23, 2026

Less than one month after acquiring the first Ladder Truck in Company history, 25 HBFC personnel have completed the Driver - Operator/Aerial course. As we continue with our operational transformation, the HBFC Training Committee has once again developed an ambitious training plan to ensure that our crews are certified and prepared for these changes.

This 32-hour course builds the foundational concepts of aerial operations and focuses on advanced driving, positioning, and operational techniques. Crews took advantage of the hands-on practical scenarios which were designed by BCFD EVD John Morris, to simulate real-world incidents. This allowed our personnel to refine their ability to safely and effectively operate aerial apparatus in a variety of challenging environments. In addition to Aerial Driver/Operator training, Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT) was also covered as well. EVDT is an 8+ hour classroom-based program with outdoor practical work. It is a comprehensive program designed to enhance the safety, skill, and professionalism of emergency vehicle operators. The course focuses on defensive driving techniques, vehicle dynamics, risk management, and decision-making under pressure. In the coming months, those who are eligible will test for the Pennsylvania State and National Certification as Driver/Operator - Aerial Apparatus.

With this course now completed, Ladder 33 is currently getting new graphics installed to match the rest of the HBFC fleet. Stay tuned for more exciting news!
