Hands-On Company Training

By Captain Dan Brooks
March 3, 2009

During the evening of Wednesday, the 25th of February, Members of the Honey Brook Fire Company traveled to Lionville to an acquired building for a night of training. The building, which was purchased by Brogan Landscaping and Automatic Rain, is being renovated to meet the needs of their company and was offered to the company for training purposes. This building was originally used for offices and a laboratory, which gave the members a very challenging environment to train in. During the night members of Honey Brook and Martin's Corner (Sta. 34) went through multiple scenarios including Search and Rescue in an office/multiple room environment, firefighter missing/RIT team, Hose line advancement, and long line advancement with a "leader-line/Garden Apartment line".

Description of scenarios:

Scenario 1- Search a large office environment in ZERO visibility (complete darkness), find victim, and get them outside as a team.

Scenario 2- FF was on hose line doing fire attack when they became disoriented and is now lost and low on air. Team of FF's had to follow the 150 foot attack line inside to the end of the line and tie off a search rope to the nozzle. FF's then had to spread out and search multiple rooms in total darkness, including large open areas, find lost FF, and get them outside.

Scenario 3- FF's had to advance a 200 foot attack line off Engine 341 inside the building and find "fire" and get in a position to attack that fire.

Scenario 4- FF's had to attack a fire that was roughly 400+ feet inside the building around multiple corners, deep inside the building. FF's pulled a 3" supply line 200+ feet inside the building, then hooked up the "apartment" or "high-rise pack" consisting of a Gated Y and 1 3/4" hose, then advance that line 200 feet further inside then call for water and attack the fire. **The fastest team of FF's accomplished this fire attack in under two minutes!**

A BIG thank-you to Steve Brogan, Dante Cappelli, and Dave Mellinger of Brogan Landscaping and Automatic Rain for the use of the building. www.broganlandscaping.com and www.automaticraincorp.com.

Also a big thank-you to Mary Witman for making up boxed dinners for all the members to eat.

And finally a thank you to all the members who came out Wed night to train and better themselves and us as a department.

If anyone in the community has any type of structure that we can use for training purposes please let us know. There is no better training than to use actual houses, buildings, etc. Thank You.
