Busy Day For the Honey Brook Volunteers

By Captain Dan Brooks
July 12, 2009

The day of Saturday July 11 started off with members arriving at station as early as 6 am to start setting up for the last day of the our annual carnival. At around 9 am the company was dispatched to a cardiac arrest in Honey Brook Township. Ambulance 33-1 made the response with 2 career staff followed by Rescue 33 with 6 volunteers. Units arrived on scene and treated the patient for a medical emergency.

At around noon, the Ambulance was dispatched to a medical emergency in Honey Brook Borough. Upon arrival they quickly upgraded it to another cardiac arrest, which adds Paramedics and the fire company. Rescue 33 made the response with eight volunteers. Upon arrival crews assisted EMS with CPR, defibrillator, and loading the patient into the ambulance. When Ambulance 33-1 left the scene the patient had a pulse and was breathing.

At 4pm, while the carnival was picking up steam, the Ambulance was dispatched to Cambridge Road in Honey Brook Township for a "fall from elevation". Upon arrival the ambulance quickly called for a medical helicopter, adding the Fire Company for the Landing zone. Engine 33-2 made the response with 6 volunteers followed by Traffic 33 with 2. Upon arrival, crews set up a landing zone on the driveway leading to the scene and sent its crew to assist the EMS with the patient. Crews operated for about a half hour before heading back to station to start working at the carnival.

The evening consisted of members working all the food and game stands during the carnival while Wagontown Fire Company stood by at our station in case of any further calls. The evening ended at around midnight once everything was closed and cleaned up.

Shortly after, at 2 am the company was dispatched to a building fire on Horseshoe Pike in the area of the Honey Brook Gardens Apartments. A passer-by reported smoke coming from a building in that area. Chief 33 (Witman) responded followed closely by Engine 33-1 with a crew of 6. Seconds later the Chief arrived on the scene of "Steeple to People", a thrift shop in the old Honey Brook Kindergarten Building, with heavy smoke from the second floor and added Ladder 69 (Twin Valley), the working fire dispatch, and Station 49 (East Brandywine) for the RIT. Upon Engine 33-1's arrival, crews forced entry and stretched the 150' CAFS bumper line through the front door and up the stairs. Engine 33-5 arrived and laid a water supply line into the scene from a hydrant and supplied Engine 33-1, while its crew advanced the 200' bumper line off Engine 33-1 into the first story. Interior crews on the second story experienced high heat and smoke and were slowed up by a weakened floor and fire in the floor between the first and second stories as well as heavy fire throughout the second story. Due to the buildings use, movement inside was very limited due to a large fire load of clothes and shelving throughout. Exterior crews deployed ladders around the building and started venting the second story windows while Ladder 69 laddered the roof and vented, giving the interior crews some much needed relief from the smoke, heat and steam. Extensive overhaul had to be done to chase the fire in the walls and ceiling. A Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) Engine 49 set up in the front yard in case a firefighter would get in trouble inside.

The fire is under investigation by the County and State Fire Marshall's Office's.

Thanks to Lancaster County Station 3-2 (Blue Ball) for covering the Honey Brook area while we were on-scene. They handled a good intent call in Honey Brook Borough while on standby.
