Gas Leak Shuts Down Honey Brook Borough
By Deputy Fire Chief Robert Klinger, Jr.
January 31, 2014
At 0730 hours the Station 33 (Honey Brook) was dispatched to the 4600 block of Horseshoe Pike in Honey Brook Borough for a reported gas leak. Deputy 33 (Klinger) responded and was advised by Chester County Fire Board (J. Bell) that contractors had struck a line while excavating along Route 322.
Deputy 33 arrived on location and confirmed a 1 inch gas line had been ruptured and an active gas leak was underway. Deputy 33 requested a Fire Police Task Force to assist in closing off the immediate area to the public by directing traffic around the scene to reduce any chance of the escaping gas from seeking an ignition source. Fire crews along with the excavators managed to place a temporary clamp on the line that was leaking which slowed the leak until PECO crews arrived to place a permanent cap on the line.
It was found the gas line was the service line that once fed the old Pizza Pie Building which burned down in the early1990's which is why it wasn't marked for the excavators.
Crews cleared the scene and returned at 0841 hours.
